For the past couple of weeks I've been working on this illustration for the special edition pack of Playing Arts cards.
"Playing Arts is a collective art project where designers and illustrators from all over the world express their vision of an ordinary playing card using personal styles, techniques and imagination". "539 artists from 67 countries participated in design contest, showing their vision of the custom playing card. Each contestant was asked to create an artwork for one particular card in his/her distinct style and technique"
I was given the 9 of Spades to design so I went with the idea of how 9 is the end of a cycle and the beginning of a new. The butterfly is symbolic of transformation and I find blue to be a soulful colour. I depicted a woman letting letting go of her past and embrassing the new by transforming into a cluster of butterflies, opening herself up to the vast unknown of the Universe, so I guess the image also depicts courage, trust and faith.
*UPDATE: After submitting this piece it went into the First Round, which is public vote. You click your favourite image via the website. Those voted favourite go to the Second Round. A panel of judges vote their favourites and out of that bunch are the ones that get added to the edition of playing cards. I'm happy to report I was very close to getting mine voted, out of the nine for 9 of Spades my image came 2nd. Sweet!
